Rural thrust of Rashtriya Sevabharathi

V SUNDARAM

Love is the perfect antedote that floods the mind to wash away hatred, jealousy, resentment, anxiety and fear.

- Sri Guruji Golwalkar.
The nation is celebrating the centenary year of Sri Guruji Golwalkar who was a man of clairvoyant national vision and indomitable courage. When India got its independence on 15 August, 1947, Sri Guruji Golwalkar understood clearly that while the nation had obtained its political freedom with the end of British Rule, yet it had a long way to go in all other fields of national endeavour- economic, social, educational & cultural, spiritual and other spheres.

Keeping this larger objective in view, he took the initiative of starting several nationwide organisations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Akhila Bharitiya Vidyarti Parishad, Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, Vanavani Kalyana Ashram and the Sishu Mandir Educational Institutions. Achievement of national rejuvenation through organised programmes of integral humanism became his foremost objective after independence till his death in 1973.

All the RSS activities and programmes in the field of education, medical care and health, vocational training for self-reliance, total village development, promotion of social harmony and preservation of cultural heritage are being controlled, administered and coordinated by a national organisation called 'SEVA BHARATHI'. There are units of Sevabharathi in every State.

Swami Vivekananda said: 'If you really need God's blessings, you have to serve the needy. Naraseva is Narayanaseva'. Throughout his life, Sri Guruji Golwalkar emphasised the spiritual, temporal and practical importance of Seva Disha. The Disha, in other words the chief thrust and direction of the seva activities, done by Savabharathi in all parts of the country is far more important than the activities themselves. The larger national aim is to create conditions which would quicken the conscience of the recipients of the service, instilling in them the urge for self-improvement as an essential pre-condition for self-reliance.

Throughout his tours embracing the whole of India, Golwalkar was never tired of saying that soulless mechanical service doling out some crumbs of benefits and amenities to the helplessly poor people in our country would only demean both the recipient and the giver of benefits - the former losing his self-esteem getting into a state of mental slavery and pauperism and the latter presuming to play the role of an egoistic cosmic saviour! Completely imbibing the spirit of this message, Sri Balasaheb Deoras, the third Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtreeya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS ), always used to declare that the Sevabharathis should be judged on the basis of the social ideology, social commitment and social policies of the RSS.

As on 1 March, 2006, 73,083 'Seva Projects', being undertaken by Rashtriya Sevabharathi, were at different stages of implementation in India:

Education is given the topmost priority in all Sevabharathi activities throughout the country. The traditional 'gurukula' system of education was deliberately and ruthlessly destroyed by the British rulers. In its place they introduced the Macaulay's system of education which was mainly intended to produce (black-skinned) English-minded Indians (or Brown Sahebs as they were called) who would faithfully slave for their English masters by hating and scorning everything that was India. Consequently, even after independence, educational institutions are continuously producing only jobseekers. In this system, students are unlearning everything that is Indian and rooted in Indian tradition and consciousness. This type of education contributes to private career planning and not to nation-building in general.

All the educational programmes of Sevabharathi are focussed on the following CORE DIMENSIONS:

        A) Focus on hitherto uncovered areas and sections of society. Vanavasis and the rural areas are given the highest importance.

        B) Principal focus on primary education in areas where practically no such facilities exist.

        C) Reinforcing current system of education through specially organised programmes for teaching 'yoga', 'Sanskrit', 'music', 'sanskriti', and 'games & sports' including boy scouts and girl guides.

        D) Emphasis on Bharatiya 'samskaras'. Students are imparted knowledge about cultural heritage, motherland, values, ethics, ancient and recent true history, saints and heroes, etc. Students are made to learn the importance of self-discipline, self-respect, self-dependence, healthy habits etc.

        E) Promotion of research and development in education.

All the educational programmes are inspired by a grand dream vision marked by the following signposts:

        i) Every citizen of Bharat becomes highly educated as per his/her potential and capabilities.

ii) Every citizen of Bharat worships Bharat as his motherland (Mathru bhoomi), holy land (Punya bhoomi) and land of duty (Karma bhoomi).

iii) Every citizen of Bharat becomes self-respecting, self-reliant, incorruptible, patriotic citizen contributing to the all round development of our beloved country so as to make it possible to take her proper rank among the great nations of the world.

Even after nearly 60 years of independence adequate and reliable health care is not available in thousands of villages in the country. What is worse is that even first aid is not available. On the one hand, the government has failed miserably on this front; on the other private facilities are beyond the reach of the poor people.

Rashtriya Sevabharathi is playing an important role in the crucial area of health care and promotion in all parts of the country. The contours of strategy in the area of health care and promotion are as follows:

        a) Rashtriya Sevabharathi is not committed to any particular 'Pathy' or System of Medicine. Any system that mitigates, ameliorates, controls or cures an ailment is relevant and acceptable.

        b) Wherever feasible, it welcomes a judicious combination of various approaches with regard to treatment of various ailments. Wherever necessary the most modern and state-of-art technology, tools, gadgets, medicines, methods of treatment, etc. are used to the fullest extent. Side by side, concerted efforts are also made to get the maximum benefit from the ancient time- tested knowledge in different fields of Indian medicine.

        c) Preventive health measures are given the highest priority through organised programmes of immunisation, pre-school nutrition, health education and general nutrition education.

'Gram Arogya Rakshak' (GAR) or 'Village Health Worker' services are not available in thousands of villages in the country. Rashtriya Sevabharathi and other sister organisations run several 'Gram Arogya Rakshak' schemes in many remote villages. Local persons are invited to work as 'Gram Arogya Rakshaks'. Those who have studied up to 8th standard or above are considered eligible for such employment. Selected candidates are given a basic training and then sent suitably equipped to the villages concerned to function under the supervision of qualified doctors. Mobile dispensaries, hospitals, nature cure clinics, psychiatric treatment clinics, ambulances, blood banks, yoga centres, gymnasia constitute the core activities under the umbrella of 'health care and promotion'.

Sevabharathi Tamilnadu did splendid all-round relief work in 2005 in Chennai, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Kanyakumari and other parts of Tamilnadu immediately after tsunami. Their relief efforts were fully recognised and appreciated by all the District Collectors. In several places hit by tsunami, volunteers of Sevabharathi were the first to arrive to give immediate relief on a warfooting to the affected people, particularly women and children.

More than 1000 houses were constructed and handed over to the affected people in a matter of 45 days by the volunteers of Sevabharathi, Tamilnadu.

As things stand today, 3451 self-help groups, 213 school programmes, 36 kindergarten schools, 380 moral instruction centres and 80 medical centres were the outcome of the work done by Sevabharathi, Tamilnadu.

Sri Guruji Golwalkar taught the fine art of love through service and fine art of service through love for a life time. At one of his camps meant for the Swayamsevaks of the RSS. forming part of 'Rashtriya Sevabharathi' he declared: RSS. stands for love. Love ought to be the foundation and the apex of the pyramid of existence. Love is the 'affirmative of affirmatives'; it enlarges the vision, expands the heart. Love is the creative fire, the inspiration that keeps the torch of RSS progress aflame. Love is the messenger of peace, the spirit of brotherhood; it is tenderness and compassion, forgiveness and tolerance. Love is the supreme good, it is the overflowing life, the giving of ourselves to noble ends and causes. Love is down to earth, and it reaches to the highest star; it is the valley of humility and the mountain top of ecstasy.

This has been the living motto of all the volunteers of Rashtriya Sevabharathi. May it grow from strength to strength!
