AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

The prayer of Jhuta Singh

V SUNDARAM

When the Supreme Court indicted Buta Singh, Governor of Bihar a few days ago, he reacted violently and said that he would not step down and that he would take the Armed Salute on the Republic Day. Government of India, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister cannot plead innocence about this brash, arrogant and illegal declaration of Buta Singh.

Every citizen in India knows what Buta Singh said soon after the Supreme Court Judgement. By allowing Buta Singh to take the salute on Republic Day, within two days of the Judgement of the Supreme Court against him and submit his resignation later on, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have shown that they have very little respect for the Supreme Court of India and the Indian Flag. They cannot take the political stand that if Buta Singh dies, who lives and if Buta Singh lives who dies. If the National Flag is not sacred then what is sacred? Who instigated their cold and calculated silence residing cosily in masterly inaction and inactivity? India, if not the whole world, knows the answer. In this clear and categorical answer lies both the tragedy and comedy of India today.

Against this background, keeping in mind the comic voice and verse of Edward Lear, I murmured to myself the following lines:

        Oh! My Goddess Gandhi!

        Let me have 'secular' Shanti!

In one salutation to thee, My Goddess!

Let all my senses, if I have any,

Touch this world at thy feet!

Like a rain cloud of north-east monsoon

Hung low with the burden of unshed showers

Let all my mind bend down at thy door

        In one salutation to thee!

Let all my sycophantic songs offered to you

        In prayerful supplication

        Gather together their diverse strengths

        As your splendid UPA strengths

And flow into a single current

In one salutation to thee! My Mother Goddess!

Like a flock of deaf and dumb and dead sheep

        Wending their weary way

Back to their splendidly secure and secular Madame Home

        Let all my wasted life

Take its voyage to that eternal Home

        In one salutation to thee!

        Oh! Mother Goddess!

        Please save me and

        My Blunderihar!

        My Blufferihar! and

        My Blusterihar!

        Victory to you!

        My Mother Goddess!

        Now and for ever

        Amen!!
