Chennai, Apr 20:
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today reiterated that the Tamilnadu government would file a review petition in the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) in keeping with the decision taken at the all-party meeting held here recently.
Responding to a special call attention motion moved by the Deputy Leader of the Opposition O Panneerselvam in the State Assembly today, Karunanidhi said the decision to go to the CWDT first was based on the decision taken at the meeting.
Earlier moving the motion, Panneerselvam said Tamilnadu got 205 tmc ft in the interim award and the final verdict had given the State only 185 timc ft. 'We have a big responsibility as the main opposition. That is why we emphasised at the all-party meeting that it would be appropriate to go to the apex court to find a solution to the problem.'
The AIADMK leader then alleged that the resolution passed at the end of the meeting did not incorporate the views of the AIADMK.
Intervening, Karunanidhi denied the allegation and said the opinion of the AIADMK was incorporated in the resolution.
When the Deputy Leader of the Opposition reiterated the earlier charge the Chief Minister countered him by saying that they could have issued a statement on the matter clarifying their stand. 'You should not change your stand like this,' Karunanidhi said and added that the Karnataka government has plans to go to both the Supreme Court and the CWDT.
'You can ask what the Tamilnadu government has decided on this move of Karnataka. But you should not give room to a feeling that two opinions exist on the matter.'
Karunanidhi also said that
the decision of the neighbouring State to knock at the door of the Supreme
Court was in keeping with protecting their interests. 'If we go to the
apex court, we may have to wait for 50 more years,' he pointed out and
alleged that the idea of Karnataka in going to the apex court was to sabotage
the final verdict of CWDT.
