The Camp Road Junction on the Tambaram-Velacheri Main Road is known for traffic snarls and congestion especially during peak hours. And the absence of traffic signals only helps in accentuating the problem.
With the increase in the number of schools and colleges in and around East Tambaram, the problem has only become more acute.
When News Today spoke to some of the residents of Camp Road they raised different issues.
Saroja, a resident of Avvai Street, said, 'This problem has persisted for so many years. Hundreds of commuters and motorists have to cross this junction to reach the railway station. And no traffic rules or regulations are followed. The presence of traffic police at this junction is also rare.'
The camp road junction also connects other suburban areas like Madambakkam, Sembakkam, Agaram, Mappedu, Velacheri, Pallikaranai, etc.
There are a number of schools and colleges in East Tambaram. With the absence of a pedestrian crossing, school students are put to unnecessary hardship.
Radhika, a student said, 'Its tough for school students to cross the junction. As there is no one controlling the traffic, we are at the mercy of vehicles that keep coming in from different directions, unmindful of the rules.'
A lamp post right in the middle of the camp road junction has made the motorists' cup of woe overflow. Vehicles going towards Old Mahabalipuram find it difficult to take a U turn due to the presence of the lamp post.
With the increase in vehicular traffic, accidents have become common here. Raman, a motorist said, 'As there is an unending stream of vehicles coming down this road, it takes at least 20 minutes to cross the road at the junction. An auto stand right near the bus stand is also proving to be a hindrance to the free flow of traffic.'
He added 'everyday this place is in a state of utter chaos. A traffic signal is a must at this junction.'
Jayakumar, a traffic constable
in the area said, 'Traffic becomes unmanageable during peak hours. The
camp road junction needs at least two constables to control traffic.'
