Evacuation drill held

NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 20:

A fire evacuation drill was conducted, as part of the events held to observe the international fire safety awareness week by the Tamil Nadu Fire Services department, at the Indian Oil Bhavan here recently.

The drill aimed at increasing awareness on the procedures to be followed in case of an emergency like a fire accident.

People were made to evacuate the nine-storeyed Indian Oil Bhavan building using a 'sky-lift.' The sky-lift can be used as a ladder to rescue people in high rise buildings and for spraying water. Fire control and fire extinguishing exercise were also held.

S Ramani, DGP (Training) of Tamil Nadu Police, speaking on this occasion said that the building's infrastructure should not hinder fire fighting and rescue operations. He also wanted beehives removed from buildings as they might prove problematic during fire accidents.

Exit doors and fire fighting equipment like fire extinguishing cylinders should be checked properly to ensure that they are in working condition, he added.

People should be trained to cope up with emergencies like fire accidents and must know basic first aid practises, he said, adding that preventing a fire is better than fighting one and drills like this helped the employee know what is to be done during an emergency.

M Nageshwaran, GM (regional services), Southern Region, IOC, stressed on the need for awareness on fire safety practices and rescue of the physically handicapped in such a situation.
