Cable TV operators' association today submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to protect several thousand cable operators involved in the business. This plea comes in the wake of the State government's decision to jump into cable TV distribution by starting its own Multisystem Operator (MSO),
A press release from the Federation of Tamilnadu All Cable TV Operators Association here said that they have urged the Chief Minister to protect the welfare of cable operators, who have conducting the business smoothly for the past few years.
With the introduction of Direct-To-Home (DTH) services, the cable TV operators have lost 20 per cent of their business and several prominent companies are getting ready to enter DTH platform. 'Also with IPTV and HITS entering the market, we fear losing another 15-20 per cent of our customer base. Fighting against such big corporate companies is impossible.
Hence the State government should introduce a legislation and help us thrive,' they said in the memorandum.
The association had also demanded the State government to grant them tax exemption to compete against big companies involved in DTH distribution of cable TV network.
'Unlike the electricity or telephone cables, the cable TV wires do not have proper protection and were often subjected to disconnection by anti-social elements. Hence the government should look into the issue'.
The association had also brought to the notice of the government that in other States, the MSOs had been providing links to the genuine operators. Hence the State government should also follow the same.
Meanwhile, Cable TV Operators
Welfare Association today announced that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has
agreed to take part in a conference organised on 12 September. The mega-event
would be attended by cable TV operators across the State.
