NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 20:

Former Union Minister and Bharatiya Jan Shakti founder-president Uma Bharati today said she was even ready to sacrifice her life for the sake of Ramar Sethu - the bridge supposedly linking Rameswaram and Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka.

She also challenged the DMK government to arrest her as FIRs were registered against Uma Bharati in Rameswaram and Tiruchi for her speeches against the Sethusamudram Canal Project. Speaking to reporters, she claimed there were strong evidences to prove the existence of Ramar Sethu.

She flayed the UPA and DMK governments for going ahead with the SSCP which affected the livelihood of fishermen, apart from causing damage to Ramar Sethu. Uma challenged the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to prove if no harm would not come to the livelihood of fishermen due to the canal project.

Uma Bharati wanted to know why the Centre gave approval to the project even before the Tuticorin Port Trust which was the nodal agency of canal project submitted its report to the government. 'There is something behind this. Those in the power should come forward to explain their motives to the people,' she remarked.

Uma also expressed fears that disasters like tsunami might occur due to the project since the government was 'playing with the sea' and urged the political parties in Tamilnadu to come together for the cause of Ramar Sethu. On the nuke deal between India and the US, Uma Bharati said the Left parties should prove that they really cared for the nation by withdrawing support to the UPA.
