Noted Carnatic maestro Muthuswamy Dikshitar was a singer whose ability was par excellence, said A Natarajan, former director of Doordarshan Kendra of Chennai. He was speaking at programme organised here yesterday when the divine compositions of Muthuswamy Dikshitar were rendered by V Deepika, the disciple of Carnatic singer Padmasri Sudha Raghunathan. The programme was organised by Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar Foundation.
He said the command of Dikshitar on Sanskrit, music and laya was fabulous. The skill of the Carnatic maestro took him to great heights and he is considered one among the noted trio of Carnatic music, he added.
He further said that compositions of Muthuswamy had scope for thematic presentation in them and added that he composed kruthis on various deities and holy places.
Playback singer S Janaki, praising the ability of Deepika, said her singing had the combination of melody and beauty which was a rare combination. Janaki said that efforts put in by Deepika to become a Carnatic singer deserved a pat. She hoped that Deepika would work hard and achieve success.
Vocalist O S Arun said that music was a way to attain divine salvation and added that musicians may perform any programme but their focus is the only thing that is noticed. Arun said that focus maintained by Deepika towards this programme was strong.
Conducting a Carnatic music programme with Dikshitar krithis alone is not so easy as this requires a strong focus which Deepika has displayed with ease, he added. Her approach towards swara prasthanas was very good, said Arun.
Earlier, on the occasion, Deepika recited the krithis composed by Muthuswamy Dikshitar. Nisati Devamendu, Mahaganapatim, Annapurna visalakshi, Kodanda-ramam, Sri Batukanatha, Sri Venkata and Madhurambikayam were the Dikshitar krithis recited by her.
P B Srinivos, playback singer S K Venkataraman, founder trustee of Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar Foundation, and professor T R Subramaniyam were also present on the occasion.
Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar Foundation was founded in 1999 with the objective of propagating the rich cultural heritage of India by promoting the science of Vedas, Vedanta, Yoga, Astrology and other sasthras mastered by Nadajyothi Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar and popularising his teachings and music for the benefit of humanity.
