        M S Swaminathan, agricultural scientist and founder of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), was given Hamsadhwani's distinguished Citizen Award of the year here recently.

        According to a press release, the award was conferred on Swaminathan on the 60th year of Independence as a gesture acknowledging his innumerable contributions to the nation, the citation said.

        Recognising him as one of the most influential Indians, Hamsadhwani said Swaminathan would revive Indian agriculture and bring joy to the farmers. Chennai Mayor

        M Subramanian handed over the award, which comprised a citation, shawl and memento.

        In his acceptance speech, Swaminathan said it is the citizen's duty to take care of the city and urged the Mayor and M Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets, who instituted the award along with Hamsadhwani, to mobilise the public in order to get rid of the civic problems. Earlier, he launched the online portal of Hamsadhwani www.hamsadhwani.org.in and released the August issue of the music magazine.
