The need for learning by working on the concept of experimentation by students with activity-oriented thoughts was expressed by joint secretary and regional officer, Central Board of Secondary Education, Chennai, M V V Prasada Rao.
He was speaking after being honoured at the inauguration of a two-day regional- level inter- school science exhibition organised by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Delhi, yesterday.
The exhibition, in order to mould creative ideas and inculcate innovative thoughts in young minds, was conducted on the premises of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School.
Its theme was 'Science and Technology for Sustainable Development'. The sub-themes were food and agriculture, industry and environment, energy, educational technology and mathematical modelling and transport and communication.
Students of about 59 schools from the South displayed 105 projects/exhibits during the event.
Principal of Maharishi Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School S Namasivayam welcomed the gathering and honoured Prasada Rao and Registrar of S R M University, Kanchipuram district, Dr P Thangaraju, who were the guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr P Thangaraju said comparable growth of science and technology between India and advanced countries should be brought out and drove home the point of importance of basic sciences for future growth. A science book containing details of inventions, discoveries and scientists and their contributions was released by Prasada Rao and S Namasivayam received the first copy. The best exhibits in this exhibition would be selected and these would find a place in the national-level science exhibition.
A panel of scientists from
Kalpakkam along with expert judges comprising mathematics and science faculties
from colleges across Chennai would select the best projects/exhibits and
announce them at the valedictory function which would be held later today.
