        Several ryots and land less agricultural labourers yesterday staged a dharna in front of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation's second lignite mine at Neyveli demanding higher compensation for the lands acquired by the NLC and employment for each family member.

        The peasants and the agricultural labourers from around 69 villages surrounding the NLC took part in the agitation, the police said.

        Meanwhile, the Director (Personnel), NLC, P Babu Rao is reported to have said that the Corporation was acquiring land since 1957 for mining.

        The acquisition was conducted by a committee comprising District Collector and Revenue Officials and the compensation was decided by the committee as per rules.

        He said steps were being taken by the Corporation to provide jobs to a member of family, whose land was acquired.
