Adequate water supply for Chennai

        Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has announced that for the streets where water is not received through pipeline, the water supply will be provided through tanker lorries.

        According to a CMWSSB press release here yesterday, public fountains have been provided at slum areas for additional requirement water apart from tanker lorries.

        Out of 16 water supply distribution zonal systems in Chennai city, improvement works have been carried out in 11 water distribution zonal pipeline networks and 12 water distribution stations. For the rest of the zonal systems, the works would be carried out shortly at the estimate cost of Rs 322 crore which includes leak detection and rectification works for about 30,000 connections, rehabilitation of raw water conveying conduits from Redhills to Kilpauk and fixing of valves in the distribution system, the release said.

        CMWSSB has been providing water through pipeline daily to cater to the requirement of 60 lakh population in and around the city covering 15,640 streets. The treated water from the water treatment plant is received in 16 major water distribution stations and 12 numbers of small water distribution stations in the city. They are then pumped and distributed to the consumers through the distribution pipeline covering about 2,650 km.

        Also, water is supplied to the adjacent urban local bodies such as Alandur, Pammal, Anakaputhur, Meenambakkam, Pozhichalur, Cowl Bazaar, Ramapuram, Puzhuthiwakkam, Porur, Valasaravakkam, Maduravoil, Ambattur, Avadi, Madhavaram and Thiruvottiyur as bulk consumers and the respective local bodies distribute the water to their consumers.

        CMWSSB which is maintaining the city water supply through surface water and ground water sources. The surface water are sourced from Poondi, Cholavaram and Redhills lakes, Veeranam lake and water received from Telugu Ganga project. The ground water sources are Wellfields located at Poondi, Tamaraipakkam, floodplains, kannigaiper, panjetty and Minjur, the release said.
