State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi has said that industrial training should be provided to engineering students as that of medical graduates who get hands-on experience in hospitals.
Inaugurating an International conference on 'Business Incubation', organised by Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) University yesterday, the Minister said the State Higher Education Department has planned a scheme for engineering students to get trained on various industries.
Ponmudi also said universities had a great role to play in technology business incubation. While colleges created job seekers, universities should produce job creators, he said adding universities should also be like VITU in encouraging innovation among students.
VITU Chancellor G Viswanathan in his address said VITU was one of the 29 universities that received grant from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for the establishment of the Technology Business Incubator. The incubator set up in 2003, he said.
Speaking about the conference, Viswanthan said that it aimed to create an awareness among entrepreneurs and would also enhance the industrial units. He also said people from Australia, China, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Phillipines have come to attend the conference.
H K Mittal, adviser and head, National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, Department of Science and Technology, Julian Webb, managing director, Creeda Projects and Consultant to info Dev, Australia, also spoke.
