Handloom societies told to be innovative

NT Bureau
Chennai, May 22:

A five-day training programme for managers of handloom cooperative societies for three districts of Tamilnadu was inaugurated yesterday.

Handloom was not just a textile sector, but a reflection of Indian tradition which should be sustained through innovation, style and form, said T Jayaraj, deputy director general, southern region of Press Information Bureau who presided over as chief guest on the occasion.

The cooperative society has a vital chance to promote themselves as both Central and State government offered many schemes, which could be utilised in proper manner, he said. Readymade garments have seen robust growth as youth were attracted by them. Hence, cooperative societies have to focus on these sectors and encourage their weavers to turn out such garments which were sought after in the market, he said.

Speaking on the training programme, Weavers Service Centre (WSC), B B Paul, said around 20 managers were participating from three districts of Cuddalore, Vellore and Thiruvallur which would help cooperative societies to learn the nuances of the latest techniques and designs involved in handloom fabrics.

The workshop also offered many sessions on Cooperative laws, welfare schemes for handloom weavers, design management for export markets, globalisation, export scenario in the post-quota regime and customer relationship. A field visit would also be organised for the trainee-managers at the end of the programme.
