Councillor held for assault

        Congress Councillor (ward no 21) and zonal council president, who beat up an office-bearer of Vanniyar Sangham along with three other men owing to some differences, was arrested by the police. The attack took place on Friday and the arrest was made this morning.

        Police said north Chennai district Vanniyar Sangham deputy secretary Chittibabu (40), residing at Royapuram Adam Sahib Street, was holding the Vanniyar Sangham's office-bearers consultative meeting at his house day before yesterday. It was then Councillor Shanmughasundaram living at Washermenpet came with three men to his house. He and Chittibabu got into a verbal warfare which culminated into fisticuffs in which the latter was said to be severely thrashed by the three.

        Chittibabu was taken to Stanley Hospital with bleeding wounds. Following this, Vanniyar Sangham members demanded the arrest of the Councillor and staged a road-roko in front of the Royapuram police station. The police pacified them promising action against the assailants.

        Police then registered a case and conducted enquiry which led to the arrest of Arunkumar and Shanmugham yesterday. Shanmughasundaram who is said to have evaded police was arrested today.
