NEGLECTED STREET: While rest of the streets at Tirunagar Colony near
Alwarthirunagar have got black-topping, Durairaj Street alone is left out
for reasons best known to the authorities concerned.

Even after repeated complaints and letters to the Valasaravakkam Municipality, the Durairaj Street at Tirunagar Colony, near Alwarthirungar, is suffering from bad roads making it difficult for residents to walk.

According to residents, out of the four streets in the colony, Durairaj Street has been the most neglected and those living here are put to hardships throughout the day as they find it difficult to pass through the street.

For many years, all the four streets of Tirunagar Colony were in a pretty bad shape, as they were ravaged by monsoon, a resident said, adding Rajendran Street was black-topped in last September, followed by tar coating on Arumuga Nayanar and Krishnan Koil Streets in February 2007.

Why Durairaj Street alone is left to suffer with battered and potholed road, he asks. Also, the nearby Thaimookambigai and Janaki Raman Streets (from neighbouring colony) are in pathetic condition waiting for relaying works. 'We have taken up our plight due to poor road to the concerned officials, including Valasaravakkam Municipality. But nothing has brought the desired results for we continue to suffer from poor condition of this road,' laments an elderly citizen.

In rainy season, the street lights do not burn resulting in the entire locality covered in pitch darkness.

Newcomers and visitors to the area have to face hurdles in every step on their path, especially in late hours as the problem of bad road is compounded by darkness.

'People have to cautious while driving their vehicles on Durairaj Street which is full of pits and bumps. Being a peaceful colony with independent houses on either side of the road, we only lack a proper road to commute to and from office and schools without any trouble,' explains Suryanarayanan, a long-time resident.
