Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has said the State government will implement the recommendations of the Third Police Commission.
Presenting the President's police medals for gallantry, distinguished and meritorious services at a function held here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said the Third Police Commission was mainly set up to hear the grievances of policemen. Once the commission comes up with a final report, the government would initiate necessary step to sort it out for them.
He said the welfare measures for the Police Department would be announced in the demands for grants in the budget in the Assembly next week.
Recalling the welfare measures implemented for the Police Department after he took over as Chief Minister last year, he said the government had ordered the appointment of 682 Sub-Inspectors. Further orders had also been issued for appointing 4543 constables, including 1379 women constables.
A total of 2207 Grade II constables who were appointed in 1995 were promoted as Grade I constables. 'The government had also ordered that Head Constables would be promoted as Sub-inspectors based only on their seniority. This has paved way for every policemen to access to promotion till their retirement age, the Chief Minister added.
The medals were a honour to their outstanding devotion to duty, excellence in investigation and public service, Karunanidhi added.
A total of 215 medals, including 57 President's medals for distinguished, meritorious service and gallantry, were presented. The personnel honoured were from the Police, Vigilance and Anti-corruption, Fire and Rescue Services, Prison and Home Guards and Civil Defence.
Karunanidhi made a token presentation of the awards and the rest were presented by 10 senior police officers, including Director-General of Police D Mukherjee, S Ramani, K P Jain, S P Mathur, K Natarajan and P Rajendran and Additional Director General of Police S K Upadhyay, Letika Saran, Bholanath and R Sekar.
Additional Commissioner S R Jangid, Joint commissioner (South) Dorairaj, Deputy commissioner, Triplicane Ramasubramani were among those who were honoured.
Speaking on the occasion, DGP D Mukherjee said the department should modernise itself to meet the emerging challenges. The criminal offences had declined gradually with strict vigilance and the police were witnessing increase in crime detection cases, he said.
Earlier, the Chief Minister inspected a guard of honour and took the salute.
