Proposed institutions in TN, a boon

CII hails CM's move

NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 23:

There is an imperative need to set up more institutes in Tamilnadu. More so in down south since its contributes a sizeable Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).

Keeping this in view, the Tamilnadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has recently made a plea to the Centre to find ways and means to set up premier national institutions in Tamilnadu.

Welcoming the move, the Tamilnadu State Council of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has stated that it would go a long way in not only providing quality education but honing the skills of the students.

Gopal Srinivasan, chairman, CII Tamilnadu State Council said that the proposal for establishing 3 premier institutions in Tamilnadu would be a boon to the State.

In press statement, CII chairman said that the Tamilnadu Chief Minister's request to the Prime Minister of India for setting up a new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Madurai, an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Coimbatore and an Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER) in Trichy would give a major thrust to the technical and professional education system in the State, particularly, the southern districts.

The southern districts of Tamilndu contributes to over 19 per cent of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and setting up of these premier institutions in southern Tamilnadu will ensure quality higher education to students and also provide a fillip to the development of Tier II and Tier III towns in attracting more investments, thereby ensuring equitable growth across the State.

'CII is committed to the development of Tier II and Tier III towns,' said Srinivasan and added that Tamilnadu is number one in the availability of skilled manpower in India and setting up of premier management institutions in the State would further supplement the human resource development and pace of industrialization in the State.

Complementing Chief Minister's vision for a socially inclusive growth, Srinivasan said that CII will impart skills development programmes for over 10,000 SC / ST students on different industrial skills at the State level.

CII is setting up a vocational school for SC/ ST youth at several industry clusters across the State. The confederation is working with the Government to carry forward the recommendations of Tamilnadu Skills Report, he added.
