The Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar has said that women are the most violators of traffic rules when compared to men.
Speaking at a 'Drive Safe Chennai Day' function organised by the Cairn India, as part of its 'Foot Prints Project' here yesterday, he said 'men comply with traffic rules, but women in few cases deliberately violate traffic rules.'
Supporting the awareness taken by big corporates on educating motorists to follow traffic rules, Kumar said 'such campaigns involving children and youth have produced good results'.
He said due to such campaigns nearly 40 percent of accidents on Chennai roads (corresponding to last year figures) have come down.
As part of the programme, Cairn India handed over a modified road safety campaign bus to the Chennai traffic police.
Speaking on the occasion, Cairns India official P Elango said, 'the initiative was taken to do something for Chennai as it was the first city in India in which the company started its operations. Though we have moved to Gurgaon for business reasons, we decided to take up road safety campaign in Chennai,' he said.
The company has tied-up with Loyola college students to create awareness among the youth. At the ceremony, the Loyola college students presented street plays as part of their campaign.
The skits focusing on Yamadharma
and Chitragupta storyline touched on issues on importance of wearing helmets,
not to use cellphones while driving and avoid drunken driving.
