Chennai Corporation Mayor M Subramaniam has formed a three-member team to look into the encroachment of Arulayamman Pettai burial ground at Guindy and submit a report within the next three days.
According to a release yesterday, the Mayor had instructed the Vigilance Officer, District Revenue Officer (land acquisition) and Tahsildar to inquire the details of the encroachment issue. The burial ground comes under the Corporation 140 ward. The release said the Corporation would proceed with further actions only after verifying the ownership of the land whether it belongs to any private party or not. The civic body would not allow any encroachment on its land.
Trust's gesture to needy people

Over 200 sarees were distributed to needy people in Thoraipakkam by Kappa Charitable Trust, a non-profit organisation, as part of Independence Day celebrations recently.
The sarees were given through the Sakambari Women's group, Adyar.
According to a press release, annandhanam was also arranged at a private hospital in Tambaram for the benefit of in-patients, out-patients, visitors, doctors and staff.
As part of its social relief measures, the charitable trust also distributed laddus and apples to more than 800 people at Ambedkar Nagar in Velacheri.
Foreign cameras seized, one held

Foreign made cameras worth Rs 15 lakh were seized from a passenger at Chennai airport here recently.
A press release from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence said 'based on specific information, DRI officials intercepted a passenger from Singapore. When the officials checked the baggage they found Nikon D 40X cameras with accessories, Sony digital video camcorders, Sony cybershot digital still cameras and Nikon speedlight SB-800 flashes worth Rs 15 lakh.
As he did not posses any document showing the purchase value of goods, he was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Free Swayamvaram
