Know your culture, Swamiji tells students

NT Bureau
Chennai, Nov 23:

Swamy Dayananda Saraswati addressing a gathering in Chennai today.

'Knowledge should be as true as water and when we consider some of the books on Indian history, we realise it is all false from cover to cover. Still it generally finds a sacred place in our mind because to know a lie as a lie is true,' said Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

He was speaking at a programme organised by the Department of Natya, MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for Women, on its 10th anniversary today. The celebrations are to go on for a year.

The speaker said,'people should know our true culture and heritage which stand apart from all others.' He was of the opinion that history books usually interpret many ancient creeds wrongly. The facts too are not correct. 'Most of these books are a bluff from cover to cover.,' he added.

'Humankind is not totally programmed and is becoming more complex day by day. People should learn to live intelligently, they ought to know more about our culture,' He termed Indian culture as a ' healing bomb ' and said, 'the world is disturbed and wounded and the healing bomb comes only from our culture, that can heal the world. '

He appealed to students to find their right self by totally understanding their culture. 'People are losing their core self by moving to different places and adopting various cultures, while at the same time without understanding their own ancient culture.'

' Your self is in total understanding of your own culture. Understand it because you have so much to contribute to the world,' he reiterated.

Pointing that not many colleges have a natya course, he applauded the college for having such a course. However, he suggested a similar course, but for a shorter duration. As of now the course extended for five years, 'which, I think, is too long.' He asked the college authorities to teach the students about all religions. 'as.if they were part of India.'

Y G Parthasarthy, director PSSBB group of schools, and many classical dancers, including Padma Subramaniam, Parvthi Ravi Gandasala, Revathy Rajendran, Anitha Rathinam and Veenai Kannan, attended the function.
