Chennai, Nov 23:
State Minister for Local Administration M K Stalin distributed land allotment letters yesterday to over 300 gunny bag traders from Royapuram in the city who would now relocate to open developed plots in Madhavaram, a northern suburb.
Participating in the function organised by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) to distribute allotment letters here, Stalin recalled the efforts taken by him nearly a decade ago while he was the city Mayor to find an alternative site for traders to ensure their continued business without impacting the environment or causing health hazards. A major concern was also compliance of pollution control stipulations.
However, the efforts initiated then did not end in fruition as the previous AIADMK regime allotted just 150 sq.ft to only 110 traders. The traders had also been demanding more space and importantly allotment to all for quite long, the Minister said.
The DMK government had allotted 600 sq.ft land to each trader. Moreover, 300 traders had been given land. The representation of 80 more traders that they be accommodated would soon be a reality, he said.
The Minister also reasserted that the DMK government had honoured its poll promises in a span of six months in office.
Minister for Information Parithi Illamvazhuthi stressed that the traders should see that their business processes falls within the framework of the Pollution Control Board. This would go a long way in continuing their business in the new site without any difficulty.
City Mayor M Subramanian,
CMDA Vice-Chairman R Santhanam, Chennai Port Trust member L Balaraman and
Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni also spoke.
