Chennai, Apr 24:
A five-member gang, including four Sri Lankan Tamils, was arrested on charges of possessing fake currency notes here yesterday.
Police said, one Prabhakar (35), owner of a cellphone shop in Karuneegar Street, Adambakkam, was given fake Rs 500 notes by one Saleem (33) of Kovilambakkam after he purchased a huge bulk of recharge cards.
Saleem had apparently told the shop owner that he was planning to sell the recharge cards for a higher amount in his locality and promised to buy more recharge cards from him in future.
Prabhakar had become suspicious and alerted the Adambakkam police. When Saleem came the next day to the shop, police caught him red-handed in possession of fake currency notes.
Interrogations revealed that four Srilankan Tamils identified as one Mahendran (44), his sons Mahesh and Raj Kumar and Mohammad Saali (40) had given him the money.
It is reported that they had made huge purchases using such fake currency notes in several places.
Police have registered a
case and are investigating.
