Ration card issue: AIADMK walks out

NT Bureau
Chennai, Apr 24:

Utter chaos prevailed in the Tamilnadu Assembly today after heated exchanges between the treasury benches and the opposition AIADMK over ration cards issue. Trouble started when AIADMK member P K Sekar Babu asked the government whether any new shops or any appointments were made to meet the demand arising out of 39 lakh new ration cards being issued during the previous regime.

Replying to this, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies A V Velu said that of the 39 lakh new cards, 15 lakh were found to be bogus. These cards were issued during election time, he pointed out. The Speaker without giving an opportunity to the AIADMK to clarify on the charges moved to the next question which apparently provoked the AIADMK members to protest against the Speaker.

The AIADMK members were on their feet urging the Speaker to give them an opportunity to raise a question. However, he (the Speaker) said the Minister didn't make any charges against the AIADMK and urged them to resume their seats.

Intervening, Leader of the House K Anbazhagan said pointing out the shortcomings of the previous government would not amount to charges and urged the Speaker not to allow the (AIADMK) members to disrupt the proceedings continuously. When CPI Floor Leader Y Sivapunniyam said the issues cannot be discussed during the question hour, AIADMK members protested against it and staged a walkout as they were not allowed to speak on this further.
