Tamilnadu and every other State should have an inter-disciplinary and multi-stakeholding climate management group that can monitor the situation and promote appropriate action on global warming, M S Swaminathan, chairman of M S Swaminathan Research Foundation, has said. He said this while addressing a gathering during a media workshop on 'Facing the challenges of global warming' here Sunday to commemorate 'World Earth Day'.
Swaminathan also said MSSRF was establishing an integrated coastal zone management centre near Chidambaram that would have a capacity building centre for managing climate change.
He further said that rise in the sea level and increased frequency of coastal storms, high temperature, more frequent and severe drought and sudden flash floods were the climatic changes that were a matter of concern for Tamilnadu. There must be action in this regard at individual, community and government- levels he added.
'Inconvenient Truth,' a feature film on global warming was also screened on this occasion.
A panel discussion moderated
by Swaminathan was also held. The discussion dealt with topics like biological
enhancement of adaptive capacity to sea-level rise, genetic enhancement
of adaptive capacity to sea-level rise, genetic enhancement of adaptive
capacity to drought, mitigation of adverse impact of global warming on
human health, nuclear fuel for clean energy, role of youth and panchayat
raj institution and citizens' action to mitigate climate change induced
distress.
