'UP poll outcome to decide third front'

Jaya begins her national innings

Chennai, Apr 24:

In a smart makeover of her political image, AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa by choosing to campaign for Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh has made the first move towards what may turn out to be a long and fruitful national political career.

In her first public address in Hindi, Jayalalithaa took on the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and questioned her moral right to describe other alliances as opportunistic in the presence of regional leaders like Telugu Desam chief Chandrababu Naidu, Haryana's Om Prakash Chautala and Arvind Goswami of Assam.

Interestingly, the AIADMK supremo did not touch the BJP in her speech, and made a blistering attack only on Congress, its president Sonia Gandhi and the Central government. She was also very critical about the Centre's failure to apprehend Quattrocchi

     COMMENT

'Will Sonia Gandhi question Quattrocchi and probe his accounts? Jayalalithaa said and wanted to know why the Congress chief was only interested in knowing how Mulalyam's government had spent the Central funds.

Assailing Congress for joining hands with the DMK she said the national party had for a long time maintained that the DMK had 'links' with the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. 'But now the DMK is part of the Union government. This is what you call as opportunism.'

The AIADMK chief also did not spare Rahul Gandhi — the rising star of Congress, and said Rahul was not in sync with Indian ethos, tradition and culture.

'It is not our culture to denigrate the dead,' she said referring to the remark of Rahul that former Prime Minister

P V Narasimha Rao was responsible for the destruction of Babri Masjid and quipped that she would not blame the young Congress leader as he had lived in foreign countries for a long time in his life.

Although Jayalalithaa addressed the people only for 15 minutes, it was obvious that she was able to connect well with the people with her right stress and modulation and appropriate body language.

It is another question whether SP retains power or not, but it's quite clear that the AIADMK chief has set out on a clear plan with a national vision.
