Minister's assurance to Madras varsity

State Minister for Public Works and Law Durai Murugan presenting awards to students
during the Students Day celebrations at Madras University yesterday.

        State Minister for Public Works and Law Durai Murugan has promised that he will talk to the Chief Minister for constructing hostels for Madras University students at Guindy campus.

        Participating at the Students Day celebrations held as part of the commemoration of the sesquicentennial year of University of Madras here yesterday, he said on the request from the university, a hostel for girls would be constructed next year at Guindy campus.

        Since there are around 500 students, separate hostels for boys and girls would be constructed, he promised.

        The grand-old Madras University has good reputation worldwide. It has produced three former Presidents, many scientists, economists and political leaders. Despite, having many institutions for higher education in the country, only eight per cent have access to the higher education when compared to foreign countries, he felt.

        On the students role in the university, the Minister said apart from education, they should be given representation in Senate and Syndicate bodies. Also, they should be inducted in the Academic Council of the Universities and their views should be taken in framing the syllabus, he said.

        Later, the Minister presented awards to the students for their achievements in various areas.

        A cultural show was organised as part of the celebrations.

        Tamilnadu State Planning Commission vice-chairman M Naganathan, Madras University Registrar (in-charge) M Ranganatham and Syndicate member G Shanmugham also spoke.
