Total deposits in TN increase by 16%

Bank cash registers keep ringing loud

        The total deposits of the banks in Tamilnadu registered an increase of 16 per cent during the period from July 2005 to June 2006, touching a figure of Rs 1,26,575.72 crore.

        In terms of deployment of credit an increase of 28.77 per cent was recorded in the same period and the aggregate credit amounted to Rs 1,36,485.43 crore at the end of June 2006.

        Under the annual credit plan 2006-07, banks in the State have disbursed total credit of Rs 4,820.37 crore in the first quarter ended June 2006.

        Banks in Tamilnadu have disbursed Rs 5,926.93 crore to farm sector up to September 2006, under Special Farm Credit Policy. Also, bankers have financed around 4.33 lakh new farmers in the State against this year's target of 3 lakh new farmers to be inducted to the banker's fold in Tamilnadu.

        Indian Overseas Bank, convener of the State-level Bankers' Committee has organised a review meeting recently in which the performance of PSU banks in Tamilnadu under key parameters for the first quarter of 2006 - 07 came up for discussion and analysis.         Finance Secretary K Gnanadesikan delivered the inaugural address.

        The status of various government sponsored programmes and special farm credit package in the first half of current year ended September 2006 was also reviewed in detail.

        The performance of banks under government schemes like Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY), Swarnajayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY), Swarna Jayanthi Sahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY), advances to Self-help Groups, scheme for self-employment for ex-servicemen and other programmes came up discussions. Suggestions for improved performance of the banks under these schemes were also received.

        Madhavi Sharma, general manager, Reserve Bank of India, Chennai, K V Raghavulu, chief general manager, NABARD Chennai, Secretaries of government departments and chief executives of various banks with operations in Tamilnadu took part in the review meet of the State-level Bankers' Committee.
