They zip, zap, zoom in Chennai suburbs

Chennai, Dec 27:

After police vigil was stepped up in Chennai, burglars seem to have migrated to the suburbs to try their hand in two- wheeler thefts. Such thefts have gone up in Nandhivaram and Govindarajapuram near Guduvancherry where as many as 30 vehicles have so far been stolen in the past three months or so.

Many victims lament that lots of complaints were not being duly registered by the police stations concerned as they were not able to produce the original documents of the vehicles .

According to police, mostly the burglars come with a tricycle during late nights or mid- afternoons, lift the parked two- wheelers onto the tricycle and take them away.

One of the residents said, 'because of this we keep our vehicles indoors'. Arumugham, a resident of Guduvancherry, said that with the areas being spaced out, no one can identify the culprits as most of them are strangers.

With this being the case, police said, ' we receive two or three complaints every day, hence we have begun creating awareness among the public not to leave their vehicles outside their houses or shops'.

In areas like Tambaram and Selaiyur, police said they receive just one or two complaints a month and the vehicle-lifters were traced within 10 days.

When contacted, a police constable said, 'a gang of two- wheeler lifters has been stealing motorcycles for the past few months from different areas in suburbs. And we're on the lookout for them.'

The culprits start their operation after midnight. Knowing every nook and corner of the suburbs where two-wheelers are parked without adequate security, the geography comes in handy for the criminals. The engines from the stolen bikes are fitted in mechanised boats of fishermen and the machines fetch them somewhere between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000.

With the rising incidents of two-wheeler thefts, a police official suggested that vehicle manufacturers come out with extra security gadgets and make the motorcycle lock system more fool-proof.
