Chennai, Dec 27:
Chennaiites, often used to used to smothering snarls and jams, were faced with another stifling bottleneck today. This was one was on the information highway - a gateway error slowed down the internet downloads to a trickle (not unlike the traffic movement on the IT corridor in Tiruvanmiyur at peak hours).
Some called it a 'gateway error' and others said it was due to a virus 'trojan horse', the virus that is now spreading through the net into computers rapidly all across the globe.
Whatever the reason may be, the end result was that works came to a standstill in many offices, especially those dependent on internet.
Says Shankar, working in a share broking firm on Mount Road, 'the lines have been close to being down. Needless to say, our business has been hit very badly'.
Revathy, a HR executive at Anna Nagar said, 'not even a single job site could be accessed as a result of the bottleneck. When I contacted the service provider, they said normal service would be restored soon. But, nothing has happened till now'.
When contacted, Mohan, a customer care officer of Airtel Broadband said 'we have rectified the international gateway error and everything is normal.
Software companies however
did not report any major problem in their networks.
