'Dramas need a fillip'

Playwright Venkat and stage artiste Anantha with their citations at the inauguration of Nataka

film producer AVM Saravanan, dramatist Y Gee Mahendra are among those present.

        'Stage plays have to be promoted to make everyone understand the real essence of it, director of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan T K Parameswaran has said.

        While speaking at the inauguration of Margazhi Mahotsavam jointly organised by Priyavision Nataka Academy and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan at Rajaji Vidyashram, Kilpauk, here, recently Parameswaran said, 'plays are on the verge of decline in Tamilnadu but whereas in Kolkata and Mumbai, they get better encouragement'.

        Film producer AV M Saravanan conferred the title Nataka Ratna on playwright Venkat.

        Earlier, a Bharatanatyam performance was staged by Subadra Marimuthu. Actor Y Gee Mahendra staged Venkat's evergreen play, P Ragasyam Parama Ragasyam. Film director S P Muthuraman and various stage artistes including Y Gee Mahendra, Srikanth and Anuradha Krishnamurthy felicitated Venkat.
