'Prashanthi, a housing settlement project for tsunami victims of Kanathur Angalamman Kuppam in Kancheepuram district, is a glowing tribute to departed souls and at the same time a gift of hope to the fortunate survivors,' founder- secretary of Udavum Karangal Vidyakkar has said.
Speaking at the dedication- function of Prashanthi project to the tsunami victims, Vidyakkar said in Chennai yesterday that ' this project is an extension of what Udavum Karangal does on a regular basis, that is, rescuing people in distress and giving them hope for a new life. With an area of three acres about 400 metres away from the present village, around 72 permanent houses were built in two years'.
The construction project was launched on 15 December 2005 and the 400 sq ft houses had been designed as per the guidelines given by the government of Tamilnadu, he added.
Talking about the project, founder of Exnora M B Nirmal, speaking on the occasion, said, ' these disaster- proof houses are a remarkable initiative made with the help of philanthropist and other donors. The teamwork of selfless and dedicated efforts of everyone involved in this endeavour are laudable'.
Later, a souvenir was released
on the project by chairperson of Denver Sister Cities International Rocilla
Dilger. President of Denver Sister Cities International Dan Sundaresan
was also present.
