Exposing plight of Hindus

        Sir,

With reference to the article on Sukhanand Shetty in News Today by V Sundaram, I wish to state that the plight of Hindus has never gotten much publicity, but more and more scholars are re-examining history and discovering the intense suppression of Hindus by Muslims.

It is now being better understood that Muslims favoured (albeit very slightly) the Christians and Jews over those of other religions because Christians and Jews were 'people of the Book' who, in theory at least, worshipped the same God, Allah.

Most Christians and Jews, however, find nothing familiar in the text of Allah — the Qu'ran. So, fundamentally, all non-Muslims have nothing in common with Islam. Ask a Muslim what were the GOOD things that Mohammed introduced, and they will have no credible, positive response. While I don't know much about Hinduism, my understanding is that there are many virtues and noble values that motivate its followers.

Ultimately, people and religions will be judged by their positive contributions to humanity.

        Chris Chrisman, Los Angeles.

Intriguing!

        Sir,

The rationale of Indian cricket selectors is baffling. If Irfan Pathan has to be sent bach home to play in Ranji Trophy to regain his form, opening batsman Wasim Jaffer, who has been a consistent non-performing liability of the team should be sent to his school team for practice. But he is retained in preference to Gautam Gambhir who, by any yardstick, is a much better opener.

The only reason that one can think of is that Jaffer belongs to the most coveted minority community and our selectors are following the advice of our erudite Prime Minister in right earnest!

It seems that there is more murky politics than sport in our cricket.

        R Venkatasubramanian, Chennai.
