deliberating on importance of environment protection in Chennai yesterday. |
'Under Article 51 (G) of the Indian Constitution, it is the duty of every citizen of the country to safeguard the environment thus turning the majority of the population environment-conscious,' said Tamilnadu director of the Department of Environment and Forests, K S Neelakandan, here yesterday.
He said this at the inaugural function of an Environment Club of Guru Shree Shantivijai Jain College for Women, Vepery.
The director further said the concept of environment protection picked up steam in the country only three decades ago after the deliberations at the Stockholm Conference.
He also said the Earth Summit held at Rio De Janeiro in Brazil had been a watershed moment in the history of environmental protection in the world.
Neelakandan also said the use of fossil fuels should be phased out in the coming decades as they emit large quantities of noxious greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. He drove home the point that the government had now come out with a policy to blend diesel with bio-diesel for propagating the use of bio-fuels in automobiles.
'The depletion of the ozone
layer is a matter of serious concern to the global populace, hence ways
