The infant who underwent lethal coronary anomaly correction recently at Madras Medical Mission.

Three small babies born with a unique life-threatening coronary artery abnormality underwent successful corrective surgery at the Madras Medical Mission Hospital recently.

According to a press release, a one-and-a-half year old baby N Jeeva, who was found to have severe leak of the mitral valve was checked by Dr R Suresh Kumar, head of the department of Pediatric Cardiology. He found out that the leak was because of the abnormal origin of the left coronary artery from pulmonary artery and underwent surgery. Infants Mohamed Nihal and Tasneem also underwent such surgery.

The surgery involved translocating the tiny abnormal coronaries from pulmonary artery to the aorta thus establishing normal circulation to the heart muscle.

The press release added that normally right and left coronary arteries arise from the root of the aorta and carry blood to the heart muscle. In an extremely unusual congenital abnormality, left coronary artery arises from the artery to the lung. The condition carries an acronym ALCAPA.

This condition is often fatal in the first few weeks after birth. Surgical correction of ALCAPA carries a significant surgical risk. Pediatric cardiac surgeons of Madras Medical Mission Dr John Valiath and Dr Ejaz Ahmed Sherif performed the complex surgery.
