Kaliamman Koil Street at Virugambakkam. |
Traffic comes to a halt many times due to piled up garbage on Kaliamman Koil Street at Virugambakkam.
Connecting Arcot Road to Koyambedu, the street is a busy throughway as it is a transit route for thousands of motorists and heavy vehicles. However, due to the growing dumps of garbage which have started to encroach on the road, traffic snarls have become routine now.
According to Lalitha, a resident of Elango Nagar, vehicles regularly use the road thus leaving very little space for pedestrians.
'Be it in the morning or evening the road is busy all the time,' she says. Many stretches of the road, especially at its entrance, are teeming with vendors and hawkers who further constrict the space for traffic passage.
Dust cloud was once a big menace on Kaliamman Koil Street. But those stretches were relaid with black topping giving a partial relief to commuters.
Civic groups and activists stress on the need to widen the road to accommodate the rising traffic of late. Also, there is no proper system for garbage disposal on both sides of Kaliamman Koil Street.
A dumping ground at Maduravoyal
should be used effectively and the waste accumulating on the main road
can be carried away to that vast site, say the aggrieved people.
