High Road in progress at a snail's pace. |
In many areas of Konnur High Road, the reconstruction work of the storm water drains is still continuing without any sign of improvement.
The shopkeepers located along the road say that the entire stretch of Konnur High Road on the northern side was dug up long time ago and the sand heaped on the ground has been left lying there itself without being utilised for levelling the surface.
According to V R Chandran, a social activist and vice-president of Ayanavaram branch of the Exnora International Club, the work has been completely handed over to the contractors, under whose mercy the people have been left. 'These contractors are in a world of their own, and are little concerned over finishing the work on time, ' he said.
People are also of the opinion that there is a lack of coordination between the Metrowater Board and the Chennai Corporation, which according to them has severely hampered the repair work.
The visit of Mayor M Subramaniam to Ayanavaram a little over a month ago has brought little cheer to the residents of this particular ward, as he did not visit this ward to address their problems. 'When the Mayor visited an area here, we were hopeful that he would visit our area of Ayanavaram too and listen to our problems, but as luck would have it, the visit never materialised, ' said Chandran.
People along the area are also of the opinion that it is a matter of deep concern and colossal negligence on the part of the unskilled contract labourers to have broken many a pipeline that connects sewers to the main system.
The residents feel that besides suffering physically, the people are bound to face financial problems while replacing the above mentioned broken sewer lines in front of their homes.
People are also crestfallen due to the fact that neither the elected representatives nor the Corporation officials has visited the chaos- ridden area to offer solace to the aggrieved residents.
The never-ending reconstruction work has made the Konnur High Road highly congested, making the vehicular movement on the road nightmarish.
Chandran suggests that the
traffic police in consultation with the Corporation of Chennai and the
Railways should pave the way for introducing one-way traffic here by making
use of the adjoining roads.
