Escalators on foot-overbridges?

        Escalators will be provided at foot-overbridges on Haddows Road, Nungambakkam High Road, and several other such bridges at a cost of around Rs 2.5 crore, said Mayor of Chennai Corporation M Subramanian.

        He was addressing a gathering in a face-to-face meeting held in the city yesterday. The meeting was organised by Exnora Innovators Club of Nungambakkam.

        The Mayor further said that a park with a fountain would be developed opposite to Valluvar Kottam at a cost of Rs 20 lakh.

        Mentioning about Valluvar Kottam, he said that protest meetings would not be allowed at Valluvar Kottam in order to safeguard its cultural identity. A government order would be passed very shortly in this regard he added. Speaking about measures by the Corporation in Nungambakkam area, he said that a healthcare facility that remained closed for many years would be made active within a fortnight. Latest equipment would be provided at this centre in order to provide screening facilities to the poor patients at a subsidised rates.

        Regarding the complaints made by residents of 7th street of Lake Area at Nungambakkam, Subramaniam said tenders had been issued in order to lay the road with concrete before the onset of monsoon. He also said that street lights in interior parts of Nungambakkam would be upgraded from 70 watts to 150 watts in order to provide better visibility by improving the illumination.

        Referring to a complaint made by the K Balasubramanian, executive committee member of the club, about lack of an electric furnace at Nungambakkam crematorium, the Mayor said that 27 out 38 crematoriums would be provided gasifier units this year at a cost of Rs 27 crore. He also said 183 persons who were working on contract basis in crematorium/burial grounds would be made permanent. He also said they would be designated as crematorium assistants.

        On complaints about frequent power failure he said that the power consumption had risen to 50 per cent this summer. Steps were being taken to install more number of transformers.

        Founder president of Exnora International M B Nirmal called for reviving the zero waste management facility at Independence Day Park. Municipal Councillors and officials also were present on this occasion.
