Governor Surjit Singh Barnala has called upon the universities to aim for innovation in curriculum and introduce novel methods to instill a sense of competence among the students.
Speaking at the Daughter Universities Day celebrations organised by Madras University as part of the sesquicentennial year festival yesterday Barnala said that higher education should aim to raise the intellectual and make the youth fully prepared to meet the challenges of life. 'Universities as a seat of higher education should ensure that the colleges enhance the learning ability of the students with the help of latest technologies,' he said adding that the universities should take it as their onerous responsibility in moulding the students into better personalities and make them contribute to the development of the society.
Stressing on the importance of value based education, Barnala said that the universities should chalk out plans to spread education to every nook and corner of the country. Higher education empowers the youth making them dynamic, idealistic and socially responsible persons, he said.
State Finance Minister K Anbazhagan said that the University of Madras has produced a number of eminent personalities including former Chief Minister C N Annadurai. He also said that the University was the first to voice in favour of the Tamil to recognise it as a classical language.
State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy said that the Britishers rule came in as a blessing in disguise for the nation, as it paved way for a firm development of education in the country.
Madras University Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandran said since the inception of the university in 1857, it had played the role of a mother to 15 other universities that includes the University of Mysore, Osmania University in Hyderabad, Andhra University in Vishakapatnam, Annamalai University in Chidambaram, University of Travancore in Kerala, Utkal University in Orissa, Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati, Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamilnadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore, Anna University in Chennai, Bharathidasan University in Tiruchi, Bharathiyar University in Coimbatore, Periyar University in Salem, Tamilnadu Dr Ambedkar Law University and Thiruvalluvar University in Vellore.
