Chennai, July 29:
Tension gripped Mylapore when residents of the locality besieged the police station protesting against the arrest of a social activist and demanding his release.
According to police, Noyan alias Nandakumar, running a social service organisation - Elankuyil Manitha Nesa Sangam in Mylapore, had been demanding the State government to open the now defunct Primary Health Centre at Thandavarayan Koil Street. Despite repeated representations, things failed to materialise. Meanwhile, the government had invited for a public consultation on Adyar Ecopark on 1 August. Protesting the move, the sangam put up graffiti all along Santhome High Road stretch.
On information, the Corporation
authorities removed the graffiti which was objected by the social activist
and the locals. Based on a complaint, social activist was arrested for
preventing government officials from discharging their duties. Enraged
over this, the locals in large numbers besieged the Mylapore police station
demanding his release.
