Chennai, Aug 30:
Members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, Students Federation of India and All India Democratic Women Association today jointly protested against what they saw as an indirect hike in bus fare hike by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
Leading the protest, DYFI State treasurer Velmurugan, addressing the gathering, said the State government should immediately review the high bus fare fixed for 'M' service, 'L' service, Express, Deluxe, Blue line and Yellow line. Instead, there should be a uniform fare for all the services, he added.
At present, he said, the
MTC operates 2660 buses of which 70 per cent fall under the high bus fare
category. Free bus passes provided to the school students and college students
were not valid in these buses, he said. He condemned the DMK government
for following the footsteps of AIADMK for indirectly raising the fares.
He further said that blaming the previous government's order for the present
hike is 'simply unacceptable'. About 100 odd cadres took part in the protest.
