Call for total prohibition in TN

NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 30:

Total prohibition should be imposed in the State to save many families torn apart by the scourge of alcoholism, said Swami Agnivesh, who has launched the Anti-Liquor Movement in Haryana.

Speaking at a seminar organised by various women's organisations and NGOs to highlight the ill-effects of alcoholism here yesterday, he said, 'alcoholism is a major problem in Indian society.

The consequences are particularly severe among the working classes, where men often spend large portions of their meagre daily wages on drinking while their families go without adequate food or shelter.'

He also charged that corruption among police personnel had increased as a result of which they turn a blind eye towards smuggling of alcohol and its consumption.

The Swamiji lauded Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S Ramadoss for initiating campaigns against alcoholism. He also called for a State-wide awareness campaign by various women's organisations against liquor consumption.
