Onyx back in action

NT Bureau
Chennai, Aug 30:

Residents of four zones coming under the Chennai Corporation are a sore lot as they are unhappy over the apathy of the civic body in clearing garbage in the zones. And the Corporation last evening handed over back the work to Onyz the contract of which has been terminated earlier.

They say that the Corporation should have ascertained whether the firms that have taken the contract have complied with the preliminary works. As it has failed in its obligation, there has been uncleared litter, they add. Two firms - a Columbian firm Panalka and Neelmetal of Delhi - have been given the contract for the job in zones 6, 8, 10 and 3.

As the contract with Singapore-based Onyx came to an end, the new arrangements have been made with Panalka and Neelmetal.

These two new firms have not taken prior measures like placing of dust bins at vantage points, planning and employing of staff, it is said. Hence the situation has turned worse, moreover with the rain playing spoilsport.

The people in the said zones through their Councillors have taken the matter up with Mayor, Commissioner and Local Administration Minister. The Minister has promised action in a few days. Meanwhile, the Corporation called in Onyx last evening and handed over the work to them.
