Chennai, Aug 30:

'University of Madras has been restructuring and remodelling its educational programmes to make maximum use of globalisation of education,' Vice-Chancellor of University of Madras S Ramachandran has said.

One such initiative is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the British Institute of Technology and E-commerce (BITE) with the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) attached to the university, Ramachandran told presspersons here yesterday.

Giving details on the tie- up, the Vice-Chancellor said, 'IDE has been instrumental in bringing the benefits of education to Indian students who are in the remote parts of the country.

The joint venture with BITE will bring the benefits of studying abroad and the process will facilitate re-location of students to London for pursuing higher studies.'

The courses offered are: MBA innovative management, MSc Innovative Technology and MBA hospitality management to graduates at special rates. BITE has also opened its regional office in India on IDE campus to reduce its annual fee from Rs 8.2 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh.

There is also an offer of 45 per cent scholarship on the courses. Successful students would be qualified for the International Graduate Scheme (IGS) which allows them full-time employment in the UK during the second year.

Apart from this, a three-day free seminar kick-started yesterday on the IDE premises to give insight into the various courses offered and the career options available. It would also give IELTS training and detail about visa procedure and fees, scholarship etc.

'It is a new avenue in relation to public-private partnerships and no way it undermines the quality and diversity of Indian education but makes students go out and understand the global world today,' said director of BITE Dr Muhammad Farmer.
