'Trainers (teachers) should be taught modern teaching methodologies and must be imparted with the current knowledge in their respective domains for the growth of education,' State Minister for Higher Education K Ponmudi has said.

Delivering the valedictory address at the CII-University of Madras Employment Programme here yesterday, the Minister said, 'It is indeed a good step towards the common goal, quality and good education for all.'

He also announced that the State government would provide two-month training in teaching methodologies to faculty members to be recruited for colleges and other higher education institutes to enhance their capacity to inspire students to improve standard of education.

Insisting on the need for direct and better communication for trainers, the Minister said, 'Earlier, during my stint as college lecturer, I have seen so many faculty members adopting the same kind of attitude right through their career till retirement without updating themselves in their respective domains. This not only results in poor communication skills but also makes their students incapable of updating their knowledge any more.'

Delivering the keynote address, University of Madras Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandran said, 'The effectiveness of the programme would be measured based on the number of students who would be placed.'

He also announced that each faculty member would receive a cash incentive of Rs. 1,000 per student on his placement.

Nearly 120 faculty members from different colleges of the State were trained and awarded with course completion certificates.

B Santhanam, chairman of the CII-Southern Region, Task Force on Skills, Employability and Affirmative Action and managing director of Saint Gobain Glass India, and Sreeram Iyer, co-chairman of the Information Communication Technology Forum CII-Southern Region, and CEO of Scope International, attended the ceremony.
