Four- corner contest likely for byelection

NT Bureau
Chennai, May 30:

There seems to be a four-corner contest in Madurai West Assembly byelections. With just two days left for filing of nominations, leaders of various political parties are busy in the selection of candidates.

Both AIADMK and DMDK have already announced their decision to contest the byelection while Congress has been given the seat by the DPA head and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. This apart, BJP State president L Ganesan has announced that the party would field its candidate.

AIADMK ticket aspirants are flocking to the party headquarters to get the application forms and it is expected that former Chief Minister and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa would announce the candidate after scrutiny of applications by the committee appointed by her.

On the DMDK side, the party leader Vijayakant is likely to return from London on 4 June and is expected to hold discussions with party functionaries in Madurai for selection of candidate. Party sources said that Vijayakant would camp in Madurai for election campaign.

As for Congress, ticket aspirants are lobbying both at the State and Central- levels and the suspense would come to an end when AICC leader Sonia Gandhi announces the candidate. Hectic campaign by various political parties would commence next week in Madurai West following the announcement of candidates for the byelection.

Meanwhile, Election Commission is making elaborate security arrangements for peaceful conduct of the byelection.
