As the World is observing 'No Smoking Day' tomorrow, it has become necessary to rethink about the ill-effects of smoking.
According to a press release, Dr G Sengottuvelu, cardiologist, Sri Ram Chandra Medical College and Research Institute, who has been creating awareness in Chennai on the ill effects of smoking says most people associate cigarette smoking with breathing problems and lung cancer, but smoking is also a major cause of cardiovascular diseases.
Cigarettes have as much as 4,000 chemicals, including poisonous substances like nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar and hydrogen cyanide, apart from 43 known carcinogens.
Cigarette smoke does not
just affect smokers, but also the people around them. Passive smokers are
liable to suffer from chronic respiratory problems, cancer and heart disease
as a result of passive smoking, he says.
