(Poi)
Prakashraj is known for his penchant to produce movies with panache. Veteran K Balachander is a master storyteller, who lets his films do the talking. The expectation was at a higher pitch in that scratch combination.
Flattering to deceive is the offering - Poi turning out to be insipid. Detrimental factors are the incoherent screenplay, dull narration and amateurish work of the star cast.
The movie revolves around Kamban (Uday Kiran), son of a Tamil political leader Valluvan (Avinash).
Unable to cope up with the strict ways of his father, the easier thing for him is to hop over to Sri Lanka. Love is instant running into Shilpa (Vimala Raman). Trouble brews in the form of a dance master Roshan (Sridhar), who has a crush on Shilpa, dating back to the childhood days.
The movie also features Balachander and Prakashraj, albeit in roles sans substance.
While KB personifies the conscience, Raj is a symbol of fate. Their 'encounters' are dull putting spokes on the pace.
Debutant Kiran has been cast as a bubbly youth. With his good screen presence, he is an apt choice.
The big letdown is Vimala Raman, not the 'right choice' from the director.
In not coming with the right emotions, she makes heavy weather of a seemingly simple role. The scene stealer is Geethu Mohandoss, making good of her limited footage. The rest of the cast including Sridhar, Badava Gopi, Renuka are disappointing.
A pile of characters in a KB movie is nothing new. Jarring aspects are the slow narration and predictable turn of events.
The master having lost his touch is the only truth surfacing out of Poi.
