He was 91 and is survived by two sons and two daughters, family sources said. Rajam was born in a musician's family. He was the elder brother of veena maestro S Balachander.

Rajam was a staff artiste of All India Radio and a Sangeet Natak Akademi award winner for Carnatic music. He was also a member of an expert committee of the Music Academy here.
