A newly-married woman from Kotturpuram committed suicide by jumping into the Adyar river on Friday.
Jansi (21), a graduate, got married to Selvyn Gnanaraj, a resident of the Slum Board colony at Kotturpuram on 25 January. On Friday, she jumped from the Kotturpuram bridge into the Adyar river.

The Fire and Rescue Services department arrived on the scene and began searching for her. This morning, Jansi’s body was found on the shore and was taken to the Government Hospital for postmortem. Following this, police searched her home and found a nine page suicide note. She had written that none were responsible for her death and had chosen death as she was not interested in leading a wedded life. She was taking the call of God she has written in the letter. Also, she had written separate letters addressed to her mother, father and sisters. Kotturpuram Police have registered a case and further investigation is on. Elderly man watching float fest falls into tank A 72-year-old man who fell into the tank of the Kapaleeshwarar Temple at Mylapore, Chennai, yesterday was rescued by the Fire and Rescue Service personnel. According to police, Ganapathi went to watch the float festival at the temple when the accident took place. He has been admitted to a hospital where he is undergoing treatment.
Girl dies while playing with mother’s saree
An eight-year-old girl playing with her mother’s saree by encircling it around her neck got strangled by the cloth in her house at Anna Nagar in Chennai yesterday. Sushmita was the daughter of lawyer Sridharan. Her parents were watching TV when the incident happened. Further investigations are on, police said. |
